Summer Daze!

What a fun and busy summer we’ve had! We decided that our homeschooling adventure didn’t need to stop just because of the summer, so we’ve been doing structured reading and math a few days a week all summer, so as not to lose our edge. However, we’ve also been focusing on having fun! We’ve been swimming 20150704_125342 20150704_125327 20150704_125339 20150704_125336 20150704_125333 20150704_125331

and on field trips. 61239 61229 61227(That’s Big Brother Jeff and his girlfriend Summer feeding the dolphins with Angel. Chris went on this field trip, but wasn’t comfortable getting that close to the dolphin.)

We also did fun stuff, like going to the bounce playground20150731_142732 20150731_142817 20150731_143027 20150731_152510 20150731_153228 20150731_153254,getting face-painted, 20150731_152046 and going out to eat. 20150808_154343 20150808_154352 20150808_154643 20150808_154633 20150808_154650 20150808_163650 20150808_163702And Angel turned 9 over the summer, so we didn’t forget to celebrate her birthday. 20150724_180611 20150724_180156 20150724_180032

Meanwhile, we’ve been taking good care of our plants all summer. I still don’t know if we’re actually going to produce anything edible (other than mint and basil) but we’ve sure had fun trying, and our plants are green and flowering. 20150815_164731 20150815_164723 20150815_164527 20150815_164523 20150815_164513 20150815_164505 20150815_164501

It’s been an amazing summer, but we’re pretty worn out from all the activity. As everyone else is gearing up to go back to school, we’re getting ready to take a break. Chris and Angel have officially completed Kindergarten and 3rd grade, and we’re going to take two whole weeks completely off, just to relax. Then, we’re planning to kick off September with a 5-day virtual vacation to Ireland, courtesy of the awesome folks at the Little House Kindergarten site. We’ll be jumping full-swing back into our school schedule right after Labor Day!

Updates, Gardens, and Dancing

I haven’t been doing a very good job of keeping this blog updated, but we’ve been busy getting our feet under us. Now that we’ve found our footing and settled into a routine, summer is almost on us, so updates will probably continue to be sporadic for awhile. But you can expect to see at least a few updates over the summer months, and we’ll be back full force in the fall.

Onto the updates! Angel is progressing into division, and Chris is making great strides in reading! They’re both amazing students. For a summer project, we’ve decided to try our hands at gardening. The kids have never grown plants before — and neither have I! — so this is definitely new territory for all of us.

We started out with just seeds, soil and cups.

It’s been a while now, and not all of our seeds have sprouted. But the ones that did now look like this:

Carrots and Cucumbers Mint Plant Peppers and Cantelope Tiny Tomato Plant

So that’s pretty awesome!

Before I go, here’s a fun video of Angel and Chris dancing their hearts out to a Minecraft song.

French Lessons, Fables, and Fashion Design

The last two weeks have been so busy that there’s been no time to update the blog. However, that doesn’t mean that we haven’t been doing anything worth talking about! Chris and I have been learning all about bugs. We’ve read books about bugs, counted bugs, and watched videos about bugs.

Meanwhile, Angel has been practising her math by doing daily work on Xtramath and practising her reading skills by reading some of Aesop’s fables. She’s also decided that she wants to learn French. Mum was fairly fluent in French at one time but hasn’t used it in years, so we decided to learn together using Duolingo’s free French lessons. Big brother Jeff decided that he wanted to get in on the French lessons too, so we have our own little French club going on here at home.

Angel is also working on a special project. Right now, she’s interested in fashion design, so she’s created a fashion design club she’s calling The Beautiful Club. The mission of The Beautiful Club is to learn how to design and create beautiful clothes.

Both kids have been learning about making their own video game levels with Battleblock Theater on the Xbox 360. Here’s a kid-designed game level with a special message for mum:  Battleblock level

Hat Day!

We had a very self-directed day today. Angel and Chrishad a morning reading marathon without any prompting from me. Yay! They also played math and geography games, and practiced singing songs. Angel worked her way up to Chapter 2 of her rainforest journey.

Today was also Hat Day. Here’s Angel, in her gold Hello Kitty hat. Angel Hat

Chris decided to go for a hood instead of a hat — the hood on his Captain America costume. Here he is wearing his hood and holding Angel’s hat like a gold shield. Chris Hat

Up tomorrow: Appreciate a Dragon Day!

Dress Up Your Pet and Other Matters

Today is Dress Up Your Pet Day! We don’t have any pets, but we didn’t let that stop us. The kids each picked out an animal from their toy collection to stand in as their pet for the day, and came up with a fun way to show off their animal fashion sense!

Angel wasn’t going to be limited to plain old off the rack clothes. Instead, her FurReal Friend got its own makeshift Angel Original. Angel's Pet 1 That included a toilet paper scarf and a washcloth-inspired hooded cape. And check out the snazzy blue sandals! Not satisfied with only one outfit, her fashionable furbaby got a second outfit. Angel's Pet 2 This one included a small purple plastic hat to hold the washcloth in place.

No fashion design for Christopher, though. He knew just what to do for his pet. What’s even more intimidating than a dinosaur? Chris's Per 2 A superhero dinosaur with Spidey powers, that’s what! The Spiderman costume may not have been the best fit for a T. Rex, but that didn’t make it any less fun.

Once we were finished dressing up our pets, we journeyed into the rainforest for a look at the forest floor and the undercanopy, with our new science curriculum. Then we made candy out of chocolate fondant. Another reading marathon before bed rounds out the day!
